Smith Rock: The Cathedral That Changed American Climbing
Rising 800 feet above the Crooked River, this volcanic monolith pioneered sport climbing in America — and remains one of the most photographed landscapes in the West. Standing at the base of Monkey Face, everything else falls away.
The Central Oregon Story
A Place That Asks
Nothing of You
Except to Arrive
There is something about the high desert light — the way it falls differently here than anywhere else in Oregon. Sharper. Warmer. More honest. Central Oregon sits at 3,500 feet above the Willamette Valley crowds, under 300 days of sunshine that the rest of the state never sees.
From Smith Rock’s volcanic spires to Sunriver’s resort trails, from Sisters’ Western storefronts to the obsidian fields of Newberry Volcano — this is a region that rewards curiosity. Come for a weekend. Stay for a lifetime.

Skiing to Mountain Biking in a Single Day
Ski Mt. Bachelor’s 4,300 acres in the morning. Ride the Deschutes River Trail in the afternoon. Watch the sunset from Pilot Butte. This is the Central Oregon day — one that visitors return for, year after year.

Bend Leads Oregon in Craft Breweries Per Capita
More than 20 breweries in a city of 110,000. Farm-to-table dining that rivals Portland. A food and drink culture that grew organically from people who moved here for the mountains and stayed for the community.

A Lake Inside a Volcano: Newberry National Monument
Paulina and East Lakes sit inside the caldera of Newberry Volcano — surrounded by obsidian fields, lava flows, and some of the most otherworldly landscapes you’ll find outside of Iceland.

The Insider's Central Oregon
01
Book Mt. Bachelor ski rentals before you arrive
Rental equipment runs out on peak powder days. Reserve online 48 hours in advance and go straight to the lifts. The mountain gets busy; the gear lines don’t have to.
02
Go to Smith Rock at sunrise or golden hour — not midday
The volcanic rock turns amber and rose at the bookends of the day. Midday light is flat and crowds are peak. Arrive before 8am or after 5pm.
03
The Sunriver Observatory telescope nights are extraordinary
SORA runs public telescope nights with guides. High elevation + low light pollution = one of the best stargazing experiences in the Pacific Northwest.
04
Dress in layers — every single day, every season
High desert mornings are cold even in July. Afternoons can hit 90°F. The temperature swing of 40°F in a single day is completely normal.
05
Paulina Lake has world-record brown trout
The lake inside Newberry Volcano holds Oregon’s record for brown trout — 28+ lbs. Bring a float tube, stay until dusk, watch the bats over the caldera rim.
06
Sisters on a weekday is a completely different town
Summer weekends bring day-trippers from Bend and Portland. Come Tuesday–Thursday and you have the galleries, coffee shops, and trails nearly to yourself.
