When the thermometer climbs past 80 and the sun doesn’t set until 9 PM, there’s only one thing Bend locals are thinking about: floating the Deschutes. Every summer, over 250,000 people take to the river on tubes, paddleboards, and kayaks — and if you haven’t done it yet, this is your year.
The Classic Float Route
The most popular route runs from Riverbend Park to Drake Park, a mellow 2-hour float through the heart of Bend. You’ll drift past the Old Mill District, under historic footbridges, and through some of the prettiest stretches of urban river anywhere in the West.
What to Bring
Keep it simple: a tube or inflatable (rentable from spots like Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe or Sun Country Tours), sunscreen, water, a dry bag for your phone, and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Leave the glass at home — it’s banned on the river.
The Whitewater Park
For a little more excitement, the Bend Whitewater Park near McKay Park has a standing wave channel that’s become a hub for river surfers and kayakers. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s one of the most uniquely Bend things you can do on a summer day.
Shuttle Tips
Parking can be tricky during peak season (roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day). The Ride the River shuttle is a game-changer — it runs every 15-30 minutes between put-in and take-out points, so you don’t have to deal with two-car logistics.
River Etiquette
Respect the river and your fellow floaters. Stay to the right, don’t block the channels, and always — always — pack out everything you bring in. Bend’s river is pristine because the community keeps it that way.
