Central Oregon in late spring is a wildflower lover’s paradise, and the trails radiating out from Sunriver offer some of the best bloom-spotting opportunities in the region. As the high desert floor warms through May and into June, waves of balsamroot, lupine, paintbrush, and dozens of other native species transform the landscape from winter browns into electric color. You do not need to be a botanist to appreciate it; you just need a pair of comfortable shoes and a willingness to slow down and look.

Fall River Trail

West of Sunriver along South Century Drive, the Fall River Trail follows a crystal-clear spring-fed river for nearly six miles through terrain that lights up with wildflowers in May. Western wallflower, Brown’s peony, Columbia puccoon, and mountain trumpet create a tapestry of color along the sunny riverbank stretches. The trail is flat, well maintained, and perfect for walkers of all ages.

High Desert Blooms: Steelhead Falls and Lava Cast Forest

The Steelhead Falls Trail near Terrebonne takes hikers through open high desert that erupts with balsamroot, lupine, and Indian paintbrush each spring, ending at a stunning 20-foot waterfall in a rocky canyon. Closer to Sunriver, the Lava Cast Forest interpretive loop showcases hardy wildflowers pushing through volcanic rock, offering a striking contrast of delicate petals against rough black basalt.

Riverside Walks and Meadow Strolls

The Benham Falls Trail, a short drive from Sunriver, follows the Deschutes River through old-growth ponderosa forest where lupine, balsamroot, and native orchids bloom in dappled light. Within Sunriver itself, the 33 miles of paved paths pass alongside natural meadow areas where wild iris, shooting star, and wild lily bloom each spring. The Sunriver Nature Center can point visitors toward the best current blooms.

Timing and Tips

Peak wildflower season at lower elevations runs from mid-May through mid-June, with higher elevation meadows blooming into July. Balsamroot and lupine appear first, followed by paintbrush and penstemon. Stay on marked trails to protect fragile plant communities, and resist the urge to pick anything.
